The Night Circus

Erin Morgenstern

Memory Snapshot
In your own hand

What you remember.

Before the snapshot above colors it in — what rises first for you?

What stayed with you
The hush of the circus at dawn — the sense that something beautiful had ended, but kindly.
A character you couldn't stop thinking about
Marco. The way his devotion outlasted the game it was built for.
A scene that lingered
The Ice Garden. I read it three times in a row and still couldn't quite see the bottom of it.
How it felt
Like being let in on a secret I wasn't supposed to keep, and keeping it anyway.

Returned to, over time.

8 entries gathered across 9 years. Quiet notes you're leaving for a future version of yourself.

  1. 1969
    1. Picked it up again on a rainy Sunday.

Just the first chapter — the man in the grey suit, the bargain. I'd forgotten how quietly it begins, how much of the spell is in the patience.

    2. Tsukiko.

I think she's the one I keep coming back to now, more than Celia or Marco. The contortionist who has already lived through her own version of the story and is waiting, kindly, for the next one to catch up.

    3. Re-read on the flight home from Edinburgh.

The bonfire chapter — the way the whole circus turns on a single lit match — read completely differently at 36 than it did at 24. The first time I thought it was about love. This time it felt like it was about consequence.

    1. M.

left her copy on the nightstand when she moved out. I didn't open it for almost a year. When I did, there were pencil notes in the margins of the Ice Garden chapter in handwriting I no longer recognised as anyone's I knew.

  3. 1967
    1. Reading it aloud to J.

before bed, two chapters a night. He fell asleep during the clock-maker section and I kept going anyway, quietly, just to hear it in the room.

    1. The Ice Garden.

The Ice Garden. The Ice Garden. I don't know what else to write about this book yet. The whole thing arranges itself around that one room in my head.

  5. 1963
    1. Bought a used hardcover at the shop on Bleecker.

The previous owner had pressed a circus ticket between pages 188 and 189 — Cirque du Soleil, 2014, Montréal. I left it there.

  6. 1961
    1. I read this the autumn I moved to a new city and didn't know anyone yet.

I'd take it to a café near the river and lose whole afternoons inside the tents. The ice garden is the image I still see when I close my eyes.
